How to use Generic Imitrex

The ideal way to use Generic Imitrex is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

When you have a bout of migraine headaches, then you may take one or in extreme cases, two doses of Generic Imitrex. However, the maximum dosage per day should not exceed 200mg unless advised otherwise by your doctor.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Generic Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is an antimigraine medication that constricts the blood vessels in the head and helps reduce migraine headaches which are caused by dilation of these same blood vessels.

Missed Dose

Since Generic Imitrex is only taken when a migraine headache occurs, a missed dose is highly unlikely.

Please remember that Generic Imitrex will not prevent a migraine headache and taking a regular dose will not help.

Storage

Store Generic Imitrex between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Generic Imitrex in the bathroom.
Consult your doctor before using Generic Imitrex if you smoke, have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, diabetes, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Generic Imitrex if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), if you have Raynaud syndrome, strokes in the past, certain types of heart disease, transient ischemic attacks, uncontrolled blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease.
Most drugs have some kind of side effects associated with them. However, most people do not experience them at all or experience just mild side effects which subside as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Some of the mild but common side effects of Generic Imitrex are dizziness, nausea, fatigue, drowsiness, tingling, flushing, warmth, redness, or heaviness of a body part; unpleasant taste in the mouth (nasal spray); nasal irritation (nasal spray); or injection site discomfort (injection).

However, please contact your doctor if these side effects do not go away after a while or start bothering you.

On the other hand, Generic Imitrex may also cause some severe side effects like an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); severe or prolonged chest pain or an irregular heartbeat; chest, jaw, or neck pain or tightness; sudden or severe stomach pain; problems seeing; or unusual weakness or numbness.
